Search for Marijuana in Jamaica here. “Yes it is illegal to smoke marijuana in Jamaica”. You would be surprized how often I have to say these words. In my travels I always run into people curious about Jamaica and they often always ask obout ganja smoking. Ganja is the word we use in Jamaica for Marijuana or some will say “spliff”, “weed”, or “sensi”. Though illegal you only need to spend one night at a local Jamaican dance to understand the confusion sorrounding the matter.
Indeed, soon after you step into a dance (Jamaican for local party) and wander around the venue you will eventually get a whiff of some good weed. Depending on where you go you may even see a man walking around with a big wire wheel on his shoulder and pinned to it are bags on marijuana for sale ” weed, weed, weed…good sensi weed!!!” he shouts as he moves through the crowd. A real surreal moment for those not in the know. But yes it is illegal and yes if you are seen smoking marijuana you will be arrested.
The double standard lies within our culture. As you may or may not know the Jamaican roots go back as far as Africa. Out of those struggles arose a tribe of Rasta Men or Dreads (men wearing dread locks). Though not even half the Jamaican population would be considered a dread, their mystical culture is engrained into the Jamaican psyche. Many people believe in thier ideals and respect their movement. To the rasta man ganja is a spiritual plant needed for meditation and key to their religion. To that end it is tolerated by many within reason. We lash out at young boys smoking it on the streets but understand the rasta man smoking his spliff and holding a meditation.
For many years people have tried to legalize the use of ganja in Jamaica however none have been successful. Good or bad it is a part of the Jamaican culture and one of the many reasons people flock to this island. Maybe…..just maybe they will catch a glimpse of a real rasta man holding a meditation. Til next time. Search for Marijuana in Jamaica here.
