Jamaica is truly a beautiful island. I live here and appreciate quite a few of the previleges the island has to offer. I have also been fortunate enough to do some travelling and have been as far as China, Europe, Central America and North America. Throughout all these trips I have always managed to meet someone who knows a little about Jamaica. The funny thing is they all seem to appreciate it more than some of us living here.
The first few encounters just blew me away! Here I was in Europe talking to somone from the Middle East who is telling me about his favourite Jamaican music. After a few more similar encounters I was convinced that most Jamaicans (me included) underestimate their popularity throughout the world. For this reason Jamaica Writings was created to keep our fans up to date with the latest happenings on the island and off. We will prepare those who plan to visit, remind those who have visited and provide a touch of Jamaica to those who can’t.
Why are we so popular? No doubt people know and love our sun, sand and sea; but everywhere in the Caribbean has that. No we are a bit more special. The truth is that the Jamaican culture has been transported across the globe through its reggae music. Everyone I spoke to knew about our music and a common theme was their love for the struggles portrayed in reggae. Everyone loves songs about adversity or a struggle. Jamaicans have been through alot over the past decade and so we dont lack struggles…but that’s another story.
Out of those struggles were born great musicians like Peter Tosh and Bob Marley. They wrote about the lives they lived and it resonated clearly through their songs. That is just part of the passion Jamaica has to offer. So the next time you visit Jamaica please stop by the closest music shop and explore some authentic reggae music. Till next time…yeah mon…jah bless!
